Nice update and certainly a lot more stable for me but what's with the exclamation point on the app name? I couldn't work out why my Tangerine icon in the dock was opening the old version until I want hunting in the Applications folder and realised that the new beta has a new name - had me totally confused!

Cameron

I think an important feature, for me at least, that needs to be addressed is genre. I really want to be able to exclude or include certain genres when generating a playlist. When I'm making a workout mix, I really don't want to include country, for example.

[...] When I first heard about Tangerine! from Potion Factory, my first thought was along the lines of “big deal. I can make my own playlists, thank you very much.” Since then, I decided to actually try it, and see if it really works. [...]

I like Tangerine but I find one thing confusing. What is the purpose of the 'source' list on the left side? I assumed it would only use songs in the selected source to generate a playlist but this doesn't seem to be the case.

There's another software out there with the same name but very different functionality as yours...just thought I'd let you know...

Andy Kim

Todd:

We added the exclamation to the name precisely because of the other softwares out there that are using the name Tangerine.

Cameron and Merz:

A feature to pick songs from specific playlists and/or genres is coming.

Found this application today and downloaded it. Worked like a champ for me with over 4000 songs in my iTunes library. Will definitely use this on a regular basis!

Hope to see Tangerine! be able to determine BPMs for songs purchased from the ITS in the future!

Thanks - great app!!

Great app! I've been looking for something like this as well, precisely for the same reason (wanting songs to go with workouts).

I notice that the "generation pattern" looks a lot like the patterns found on various stairstepper/treadmill/stationary bike machines in gyms.

However, I do winter training on my actual bike in my basement on a trainer, and my workouts don't have the same shapes. Any chance of adding the ability to create one's own generation profiles? I have some pretty consistent trainer workouts and typically try to tie the song's beat to the desired cadence and the strength/intensity to how hard the effort should be, but my efforts/intervals are based on times and patterns. Any chance we'll see this sort of thing, or that it could be added on from outside (by me, for example)?

Chris Cleeland

Actually, I just read the Ars Technica interview and think that I could easily do what I wanted with just one additional "generation pattern"--one that looks basically like a step function (a step up, really), but I would get to determine the duration of each of the segments as well as the overall duration.

So, with this and the "append" rather than "replace", I could build very complex workouts. That would rock. Totally.

Chris Cleeland

Final question (for today): can I get it to reanalyze just one track?

Andy Kim

Hi Chris,

If you hold down the option key, the plus button will change to an ADD button letting you add songs. Perhaps this will meet your needs.

As for analyzing just a track, that feature is coming. Thanks.

Brian

Boo... It doesn't find my iTunes Library at all. No changes to where iTunes stores its music, and not an overly large Library (~800 songs).

Ross

Wow!
v0.9.6 really works well on g4 ibook.... album art displays nicely, and the itunes library loaded into Tangerine very very fast! This will make running and working out much more enjoyable! Nice job, thanks for your efforts.

I haven't read all the comments to see if this has been posted, but sorting by titles with titles that have numbers is sorting lexigraphically instead of numerically.

I just tried Tangerine and it looks like a great application. However, I'm afraid that Version 0.9.6 (2975) of Tangerine missed lots of songs that are in my iTunes library. Do you have any work around for that. I can't really see any pattern in the songs that were skipped other than it would miss whole albums and not just individual songs from albums.
Cheers,

The link on the app splash screen that says that the beta period has expired should link to the update page, though once the product goes live then it could go to the potionfactory website.

Markus

Finally! Thanks. How can I reanalyze just one song? A little confusing for me is how BPM and beat intensity works together, could you post an explanation in the later on Help menu.
Would love to create a new pattern with a choosen playlist form itunes and to rename and save it afterwards.

Eric

"Beta Period Expired" Oh No! Please release another beta or better yet the final soon.

Andy Kim

Eric and David:

Please download the latest version (0.9.7) by clicking on the download link on this post. The beta period has been extended to the end of the month.

Chris

Great app, definitely will be using it once the genre option is implemented. Just a few comments:
- play doesnt work in 0.9.6 if a song is selected in library (works with a playlist only)
- bpm for certain genres is incorrect (mostly classical, tango, lo-fi)
- the highlighting of the currently played song is too subtle
- to keep a consistent look with iTunes, I suggest moving the play/pause buttons to the top
- I don't see the download link for 0.9.7 as mentioned in previous comment

Looking forward to the next release

[...] A couple weeks back, I found Potion Factory’s Tangerine, a great little app that generates iTunes playlist based on BPM and beat intensity and a handful of different patterns (think treadmill workout patterns). [...]

Mike B

I have 9 songs out of 1800 that display BPM: Unknown and Intensity: Error. I think I read somewhere that you wanted people to email the songs that "break" Tangerine! ? Is this still the case?
